Adopt-a-Family was started more than ten years ago by the Flint Hills Breadbasket. In 2012, the program was transitioned to Junior League of the Flint Hills and volunteers of the League have coordinated the entire program since then, affirming the motto Sharing the Season.
Adopt-a-Family is an annual opportunity for the League to provide Christmas gifts to children and families* in need in the Manhattan/Ogden school district through generous donors in the community.
Families that meet the income requirements are able to sign up to be adopted for Christmas and are then matched to donors from the community. Donors** are able to shop for gifts using wish lists from the family and deliver them in person or remain anonymous by utilizing a drop off date. Because of this high level of involvement, many donors find the experience very fulfilling.
It take many volunteer hours to coordinate all of the moving pieces of Adopt-a-Family and there are several volunteer positions available to League members within this program.
